Antonina lives with her husband and small son in a villa on the zoo grounds. They are extremely knowledgeable about the animals in their care; each one with their individual quirks, and all loved like family. The zoo is well ahead of its time in providing natural habitats for its residents. Laid out like a lush garden, it’s a world famous showplace, a haven for both people and animals. Then the Nazis come with their tanks and bombs and total disregard for life. Drunken Gestapo agents shoot animals in their cages for sport. A pig the son is caring for is snatched away and butchered. But somehow the family manages, by one clever ploy after another, to remain at the villa where they daringly rescue Jews and work in the resistance. Yet through all the fear and deprivation, the spirit triumphs.Yes, at times Ackerman indulges in excessive scene-setting, eulogizing linden trees, for instance. Or she'll go off on a pages-long explanatory tangent - which, despite my impatient nature, nearly always proved fascinating. But all-in-all, I'd have to rank The Zookeeper's Wife right up there with Leon Uris' Mila 18 for a story that will haunt you forever.

I wanted to like this book. The premise is great and I like that the author tried to incorporate actual quotes from diaries and other historical sources into the story. Unfortunately, this is a case of an author who desperately needed a more assertive editor. There were very long and boring tangents that lost my attention. I put this book down/away multiple times and even considered not finishing it, but then forced myself to finish it because I was reading it for my book club. The thing that I despised most about the book was the changing voice in the writing. Sometimes it was told in first person and then it would suddenly shift to third person. In other words, it would say, "So and so did such and such", and then, "She probably felt X based on this passage" (that would then include a quote from her diary). I would have been OK with either writing style, but the constant switching back and forth was irritating.

I have a big interest in WWII history. I was really looking forward to reading this book, especially with all the great reviews I had heard about it. It was selected for my book club, and all of us felt the author was WAY too wordy/descriptive about the most mundane things. For example, there was a whole page listing every type of beetle a man had collected. On top of that, the book seemed very choppy and sometimes hard to follow, it jumped around a lot.

Reading this book I eventually began to wonder if it was in fact a novel or rather an awkward attempt at yet another history of the much documented and infamous Warsaw Ghetto of World War 2. It frequently bogs down in plodding, excruciatingly boring sidebars and tedious enumerations of names and other details that do nothing to advance whatever the plot is supposed to be. I always try to finish any book I start, but in this case I completely lost interest a little short of halfway and gave it up as a pointless waste of time.

This is such a good book I could not put it down. Such a clever idea to tell the story of the zoo and the Warsaw experience under Nazi rule. I look forward to the movie as I want to see how th e y made a movie from this book. Jack Kushner

I was waiting to see the movie before I wrote my review.....This book was amazing.......I learned so much about what Warsaw Poland had to deal with during WW2......it is unbelievable how they accomplished all they did and how many were saved because of this underground network....and this family's willingness to help....they must have all been terrorized fearing what could happen if they were caught....the people and their helpers were an amazing group of people.....I kept trying to picture our (US) having to go through something like this......it's horrifying.....the parts about the actual zoo and the animals and the ones they kept in their homes....was a nice touch to add some pleasure among so much heartache........and what they did to those poor animals.....well, between the people and the animals......I cried many times....I had to shut the book sometimes.....because I was so sad....It is on my list as one of my favorite books I have read.....now to the movie.....I think it is always better to read the book first......you learn so much...that being said.....no movie has ever been as good as the book....because they just couldn't make a two hour movie and get everything in the movie.....the movie, however, was very disappointing......I think they could have done a much better job....if you don't want to be disappointed, I'd read the book and forget about the movie....the book is amazing and so well written.....if you only see the movie, you will be missing out on the entire experience that the book avails you.....you will not really have learned anything about this chapter in WW2.....

In 20 years of professional airbrushing I have never seen such poor instruction book published. The only good part of the book was seeing the gallery of work from good artists. The Airbrush Handbook is a far better choice for quality instruction... Including T shirt work.

Basic stuff in here. The book is old, and I bought this like, 10 years ago. Guess ill review it. It's ok, nothing fancy, but they don't really give you step by step, its more like....hey, look what others can do, and when you figure out how they did it, you can do it too.

Fascinating book on living in a culture many Westerners a) don't know much about, and b) don't quite understand. Engaging, funny, and thought provoking. My only wish is that the author would have elaborated a little more on how he personally negotiated his relationship, so to speak, to his home country. There is a bit more "it just is the way it is" (in terms of how women are treated, enforcing laws, etc) rather than "this is how I reconcile the two different viewpoints." I like and appreciate that Mr. Majd has a connection and appreciation for Iran, but as a reader would have liked a little more discussion of how he emotionally and cognitively reconciled the differences, other than anecdotes of how he and his family avoided patrols and kept quiet and under the radar. Having said that, a really good read.

Hooman Majd's latest book is a very personal recounting of the year he recently spent living in Tehran. It was his first time to live in Iran since his own infancy - Majd grew up living outside of Iran, primarily in the US and UK, and so he was living in Iran for the first time as an adult, bringing his American wife and infant son along with him.Iran today is perhaps the most strategically important country in the world where the U.S. does not maintain a diplomatic presence. We need to understand one another better than we presently do. Although the U.S. is not officially represented in Iran, the UK did maintain an embassy until 2011 - and in fact it was on Nov 29, 2011, during Majd's stay in Tehran, when the British Embassy was stormed and subsequently shut down. The UK immediately expelled Iran's embassy staff from London, and only recently have the two countries began to talk together about reopening their respective embassies.This book attracted me because I want to understand Iran better, at a personal level. Reading Majd's words, I have the impression that he is a very good and decent person. His pride of Iran and of his Iranian heritage is evident throughout. He is very honest in sharing his personal thoughts throughout his stay in Tehran, his anxieties as he lived in Iran and helped his wife and son to adapt to the country.Their adjustment to life Tehran takes time. The pollution of Tehran is severe (Economist magazine in 2011 said that Tehran is one of the most unlivable cities in the world), and his descriptions of the prevalence of small scooters darting through congested traffic, and the adaptations needed to live with a small child in Tehran (they learn that toting a car seat while taking their son with them in taxis is unworkable), are interesting. Modern Iran is a security state, but on the surface life is ordinary and unremarkable. And despite the pollution, Majd remarks several times to how clean the city is maintained.The life of `real' Iranians is interesting to observe, although to be fair Majd's experiences are almost entirely with upper-class and affluent members of society, often describing parties held at luxurious homes, behind high walls built for security, and with alcohol openly served. This educated and successful class of modern Iranian citizens, with their satellite television, cell phones, Facebook and twitter accounts, is not so much different from ourselves and others in western Europe and elsewhere throughout the world these days. It makes one wonder - why do people continue to tolerate the rules applied to their society, when so many clearly not only disagree with them, but also openly disregard them?And to that point, he observes that Iran has not shared the "Arab Spring" that has caused such upheaval and change elsewhere in the Middle East. He expresses profound disappointment that the '79 Islamic Revolution in Iran did not lead to a democratic era but instead resulted in the Islamic regime that Iran now endures; and perhaps the experience and disappointment in the outcome of the '79 revolution helps explain why Iran's citizens do not rise up today in another revolution. Majd does provide some good insights into this, and there are also a few places in the book where he shares stories that open the door slightly into the dark side of how the current regime behaves - Chapter 8, for example, recounts the experience of an acquaintance of Majd who had been imprisoned in the infamous Evin cells in Tehran where political prisoners are held. In fact, it was at this point in the book, almost halfway through, that I began to feel that Majd was finally providing something of substance regarding life in Iran today, since the book had so far been almost entirely his personal thoughts while getting settled in Tehran with his family and adjusting to life there.There are other interesting cultural insights. The concept of the "sulk" for example - how Iranian individuals may resort to using the sulk in order to express their disappointments or frustrations, even including the highest political leaders. The 2011 sulk of President Ahmadinejad - Majd refers to it as the "Big Sulk" in chapter 4 of the book - took place during Majd's year living in Tehran. And Ahmadinejad had plenty of precedent, going all the way back to pre-Shah days when President Mohammad Mosaddegh was known to behave similarly.There were a few disappointments in the book too, when Majd has chosen to skim over details of life in Tehran that would be fascinating to read about. For example - he mentions going to an opium party, and obviously participated himself, but beyond mentioning it he goes no further. Here is one instance where he experienced something that few of us in the west would ever have the opportunity to even observe, and yet he gives no insight into it. Better that he left it out completely, than tease us with the brief mention without going any further.This is not a book for someone who desires a hard analysis of the Iranian regime or political structure today (for that perhaps one of his earlier works would be better suited - either The Ayatollah Begs to Differ: The Paradox of Modern Iran or The Ayatollahs' Democracy: An Iranian Challenge). It is a personal recollection, and in personalizing the story, Majd again and again discusses his own anxieties regarding the risks he was taking in deciding to live in Iran with his wife and infant son. In the end, he had no serious problems whatsoever while living there, and so perhaps that was the point - emphasizing his fears while making it clear that none were realized.

I went to Iran to work and live in the 1970's . My journey was unusual for an American in that I went along with a good Persian friend and also. In that I had no contact with Americans or their surrogates during my many years there. Yes, like many I was was unable to remain in Iran after 1979 but my love for the people and culture of Iran remains intact. This excellent account has helped me much better understand the current state in Iran and has renewed my faith that all of the good parts of the culture remain intact .

well-written smart appraisal of current views and events in Iranian daily life generally, however it is less than accurate in its description of a foreign woman's existence in contemporary Iran and its grave limitations and precarious circumstances. This book gives the impression that it is safe for a foreign woman to live in Iran today, that's very far from the truth, even when your husband is an ayatollah's relative.

Laugh out loud--the best black humor I've read in a long time. Yes, life in the Islamic Republic of Iran (IRI) really is a near-total fiasco, proving C. S. Lewis's dictum that 'theocracy is the worst form of government.' Sometimes you don't know whether to laugh or cry at life under this ridiculous but tragic regime. Slowly but surely, the IRI is destroying itself, but unfortunately its taking countless innocent lives with it, including many of the best hearts and minds that Iran has to offer. Remember Hamlet saying that 'Denmark's a prison'? Wonder what he would have said about Iran.

I’ve read hundreds of celebrity biographies. Many’s the time I’ve been disappointed because the author skipped over or treated lightly the one movie or play the subject wrote or starred in that was my favorite, and I craved to know more. Biographer Mark Griffin, with All That Heaven Allows: A Biography of Rock Hudson, cannot be accused of leaving anything out. Meticulously, he makes sure we know of each and every performance Hudson ever gave, complete with some anecdotes and critical appraisals. And yet I wasn’t satisfied with all this. Using hundreds of articles and interviews, Griffin pieced together a look at this Hollywood icon who became the face of AIDS. He tries to show the double life Hudson lived, his motivations, his triumphs, his heartaches. We meet each one of Hudson’s lovers and are told what we need to know to decide whether we like them or not. We’re introduced to Hudson’s friends, many of them superstars—among them Claire Trevor, Doris Day, Carol Burnett, and of course, Elizabeth Taylor who loved him dearly—and we are supposed to feel their anguish and joy at having known this man. In short, we are supposed to finish this over 400 page book and come away with a complete understanding of a conflicted soul and actually feel for him. I did not. Despite all this, Griffin never let me get under the skin of Rock Hudson, the movie star, the gay man, the friend, the son. I feel I understand Hudson’s motivations, but I don’t know the man. And good biography is supposed to bring the reader to an emotional connection. For me, there was none.

I have to agree with many of the other reviewers. Im not sorry I bought the book, I learned a few more details of Hudson s life but I didnt come away feeling like I really knew Rock Hudson much better than before I started reading. I have read 4 previous biographies of Hudson. Maybe a little of that not really knowing Hudson at the end of the book stems from the fact that Rock Hudson in real life was a different personality for each person he knew and wore many masks. The author eluded to the fact that Rocks greatest acting was in his personal life, and I feel this is true, but this wasnt gone into in the depth it should have been. His wife insisted that Rock go to a therapist and the therapist concluded that Rock had the emotional maturity of an 8 year old. I generally think Rock proved this to be the case. This I gleaned from another biography earlier.Rock Hudson was generally likeable but I have to say it was pretty apalling he cut his mother out of this life a year before she died, because he, Rock Hudson, couldnt stand to see her become frail and not the person her once knew. This is the attitude of a boy, an immature human being. Hudson displayed this behavior in many ways. The chain smoking, the alcoholism, the constant need for sexual gratification, the inability to form and maintain a lasting relationship. Not admirable qualities by any means.I often wondered why Hudson bought a house in Newport beach and an elaborate boat and within a year he sold the boat and deeded the house to his mom. He was basically verbally gay bashed and forced to move. Very sad. Newport at that time (1961) was way too conservative and small townish and his experience in that time period was probably predictable.When a book on a film star spends most of the pages reviewing in detail every film the actor was in you know that they are taking the easy way out and not really giving the reader an overall portrait. This book did that. 90 % of the book was rehashed material from previous publications but there was new info provided that was interesting. I was always curious about Hudson s first benefactor, Ken Hodges, and I learned a bit more about him. I also never knew Rock had a step sister and she was metioned but the author spent almost no time on her side of the story at all, I had to wonder if he ever even interviewed her?I sat next to Marc Christian once at a restaurant in LA. I recognized him, barely, It was prrobably 10 years or less before he died. He looked much different from earlier photos and when he was with Hudson. I am a pretty good immediate judge of character and there was something really kind of dark and creepy about his vibe. It looked like he had had facial plastic surgery, he was pale and thin and unhealthy looking. Consideriing he was something of a health nut this was surprising. He dropped his cigarettes, his keys, his cell phone, on the table and my overall impression was he was also more effeminate than I would have imagined from earlier accounts. He picked up on the fact I discretely recognized him and was kind of smug about it. Anyway I came away thinking Rock Hudson was far far from discriminating on who he let in his life and I pity him for allowing that to be a part of his life. Harsh, but a gut first reaction.I will give the author a ilttle slack in that most people in Hudsons life are dead, as Hudon would be 93 today, and the author did get some interviews with people that knew or were close to Hudson which hadnt ever been part of the story before which did add something to the book, but it was not a 100% effort on the authors part.

The first biography of the star that isn't cruel or whitewashed.

Very good read. Meticulously researched and footnoted, the book offers a voyeurs eye view into Hudson’s career and private life. So sad that someone who was so revered will always be remembered as some sad, sick lonely man.when all he needed was compassion and understanding the media AND Marc Christian churned up nothing but hysteria and finger-pointing. If Marc Christian really loved Rock he never would have proceeded with his lawsuit. The final jury award on his lawsuit is typical of the awful homophobia and hatred of gay people and AIDS of the time. I’m glad after all that time, he only received a small amount from Rocks estate. He sounds like a real creep.

About the Author

Imani Perry is the Hughes-Rogers Professor of African American Studies at Princeton University, where she is also affiliated with the Programs in Gender and Sexuality Studies and Law and Public Affairs. Perry is the author of five books and numerous scholarly articles. Her fields of inquiry include legal history, cultural studies, literary studies, and music. She holds a PhD from Harvard in American Studies, a JD from Harvard Law School, an LLM from Georgetown University Law Center, and a BA from Yale College. She is also a creative nonfiction essayist and a book reviewer. A native of Birmingham, Alabama, Perry spent most of her childhood in Massachusetts, as well as time in Chicago. Perry currently lives in the Philadelphia area with her two sons.

Imani Perry's Looking for Lorraine is a well-researched account of the author's life. Perry includes little-known and never-before-read excerpts from the Hansberry archives and papers of letters, essays, and works-in-progress by Hansberry that went unfinished before her premature death from pancreatic cancer at age 34. I knew some basic details of Hansberry's life prior to reading this book, but Perry gives a full picture of the author's life from her childhood days in Chicago to the various dignitaries who attended her funeral and eulogized her.Perry makes no secret of her own hero-worship of Lorraine Hansberry, however, and unfortunately, this clouds the scholarship of an otherwise useful book. To her credit, Perry acknowledges that her book isn't really a biography of Hansberry so much as it is "a genre yet to be named--maybe a third person memoir" (1), and I imagine that's why it was published by a mainstream press rather than an academic one. Perry's central premise is that Lorraine Hansberry was a much more radical figure in her life than has previously been acknowledged. While Perry's book shows that Hansberry was a radical thinker in her private life who socialized with other radicals of the time (including James Baldwin, Nina Simone, and Malcolm X), the objective public details of Hansberry's life as well as her body of work simply do not add up to support the conclusion that Hansberry should retroactively be viewed as the radical heroine Perry so desperately wants her to be.

It's hard not to gush about this biography because it's about one of my favorite creatives and writers by one of America's most prolific and insightful scholars. Hansberry was only alive for 30 years, but she fit a celebrated play -- A Raisin in The Sun --; a glorious friendship with her fellow queer and visionary friend James Baldwin; righteous dissent misconstrued as anger (which Perry rightfully highlights here as a dagger lobbed against Black people then [as it is now, I believe]) complex and multifaceted loves into those three decades.The best pair of lists -- her likes and dislikes -- that I've ever read is conveyed in this book. I cried at two points, probably because of where I am in my life at this moment: There's a woman from the South named Essie Barnes, who learns Lorraine is dying. She writes her a letter that begins with the sweet term, "Little girl." When white women call us girl or little girl, it's an epithet. But Perry points out that when an elder or anyone from the South, when any one of us says "Little Girl," it's just like saying, "I love you." Cherished, is the way she puts it -- it lets you know you are cherished. And then Ms. Barnes goes on to affirm Lorraine and let her know she thought her picture in the Jet was cute. Which is just the sweetest kind of everyday love a sister can convey to another. The epitome of love.And then, there is the end. A pilgrimage that is significant enough that you should read it for yourself. When I finished reading it, I held the book to my chest and let tears roll down my cheeks. Even when we don't always see the work being done, I thought, Black women will remember us. The ones who are meant to recover our stories will do the work. Imani Perry has done for Lorraine Hansberry what Alice Walker did for Zora Neale Hurston.That, I think, is why I stan for this biography the way I did for Valerie Boyd's bio of Zora Neale Hurston or Nell Painter's bio of Sojourner Truth. There is an unequivocal clarity of sight and empathy for Sweet Lorraine that only a Black woman of Perry's stature and talent can bring to the polymathic genius that was a flashing meteor here on earth. Looking for Lorraine is an incredibly beautiful and necessary addition to American letters and fills in so many significant gaps of what more we should know and understand about the great Lorraine Hansberry.

I chose this book out of several options for a college report because I am concurrently writing my thesis about many of Hansberry's intellectual peers. I was very excited to read it, as I had already noted it in a list of books I wanted to read after hearing about it through The Schomburg Center in Harlem. While I enjoyed learning about Hansberry immensely, I found Dr. Perry's writing immensely subjective, to the point where it undermined the whole experience for me (I would not have finished it, were I not reading it for a class). Dr. Perry is at times striving to situate a single life in the history in which that life was lived, at other times is extremely romantic and emotional about her subject, Hansberry, and then in other instances is simply unprofessional in her writing style (I don't need to know about your personal life, Dr. Perry!). I am very disappointed in this book, as I was desperately hoping to enjoy it. I will note, however, that if you do not consider yourself a scholar of history and/or Black Studies, you might enjoy it more. Her stylistic approach was just far too off-putting for me, however, as someone who considers themself to be both.

When reading Looking for Lorraine you will be immersed in everything Lorraine Hansberry. From her literary work, large & small, public & private, to her family, mentors, contemporaries, colleagues, friends and foes. All of these are interwined with Lorriane's activism; for example, you wouldn't understand the complexity of her relationships or the true meaning of her art, without understanding what she believed in and what she was fighting for. Kudos to Prof. Imani Perry for her scholarship and bringing us Lorraine as we haven't seen her before.

Ok read. I thought I would read more about her as a person. More of an author love story to Lorraine.

Perry does an amazing job writing about Hansberry and the various forces around her.
