Loved this honest book. It reads like a travelBlog but with much better insights and truth. Made me think a lot about my culture and view points, and the author is hilarious!
There is something about us all that loves a good travel novel. While reading inherently transports us to another time, place, or body, the travel novel done well gives us a unique view of a real and reachable escape from the banalities of our lives. We are the recipients of a couple of hours of vicarious livelihood, all the more tantalizing because of the ease of its accessibility, flirting with our reality.Reading this book brings to mind Orwell's "Down and Out in Paris and London", albeit with this work having a slightly lesser grade of prose. The arcs are similar, but the geography has changed. European landmarks are exchanged for fishing villages and killing fields. The boozy streets and smokey dives have a pharmaceutic-induced face-lift, reminiscent of "Fear and Loathing". But the setting and sidetrack adventures don't divert the reader from the underlying message. Whereas this book devotes its share of time to poverty and politics, ultimately it is a look at what society would be without social mores, how we act when driven by our reptilian brains, and the conflict that arises between our crumbling values and the id. At the very least, it is capable of prompting real value questions in the mind of the reader and introspection into the way our cultures conflict with the nature of our being.
Vulgar.
An excellent book and great read. I also met the author in real life, and he is a humble, sincere, and very interesting gentleman.
Epic debut
Don't let the title cheat you. There's no such thing called philosophy in this book. The title should read "F***ing in Saigon, f***ing in Hong Kong and f***ing in Cambodia". It's all about f***ing. Hard to understand why so much easy f***ing could change the author's life afterwards. A cheap sex and drug journal. Credit for the honesty, though.
All I found in this book is boredom and ignorance. Having been raised in the United states and having married a native vietnamese woman I see the author's ignorance of both countries as the main flaw of this book. Also, the extremely painful way the author says nothing is boring. I recommend not reading this book.
Expectations and reality have always been partners in crime. "Philosophy in Vietnam†explores their funk. It's a funny book of ugly realizations. On his first day in Vietnam, author Isaac Simpson, in town for a summer legal internship, buys a cheap suit. Then, after smoking dirt weed, receives a hand job from one of the countless massage parlors that service horny Western tourists. It hasn’t been three hours since he left the airport. It doesn't stop there. Simpson continues to engage with prostitutes, and unapologetically documents his exploits. All the while socializing with locals and co-workers, and sleazing in and out of nightclubs. Before long Simpson has penetrated a world of American and British ex-patriots living their first-world fantasies in the third world. Like Simpson, in Vietnam, to cash in on their freedom. But as Simpson charmingly points out: come to Vietnam for freedom, and you might actually get it. In deadpan delivery, it’s all documented in "Philosophy in Vietnam." Endless sex, drugs, and partying, along with Simpson’s opinions on more easy to swallow vices like race, class, and just about every other issue under the sun. Between the hazy nights of a Vietnamese summer, Simpson explores the silver spoon that he was given by his parents and his society. Call it a memoir, a cautionary tale, or even a weirdo's lament. But when it's all said and done what's left in this timely coming of age novel is the red, blue, and white ash of that silver spoon. “Philosophy in Vietnam†is a punk classic.
