This slim volume promises to give you the essential rules you need to participate in meetings with confidence. I love the idea of including short little scripts in highlighted grey boxes so you can see the "rules in action". However there are quite a few misunderstandings. I will only give a couple of examples:- The example for the motion to lay on the table has the presiding officer asking for discussion on the motion to lay on the table. However, this motion is not debatable (RONR p. 211 l.30).- The example for the motion to suspend the rules shows the presiding officer asking for a voice vote. The motion to suspend the rules requires (generally) a 2/3 vote (as stated later in the book) and so should be taken as a rising vote (or show of hands). (RONR p.46 l.14)- In general the vote requirements for various motions is not made clear. Previous question ("Call the question") is properly described as requiring a 2/3 vote, but this is also the vote requirement for "Limit or extend the limits of debate" and "Objection to consideration". Perhaps a table somewhere would help.The book has some high points, for example there is a nice paragraph about the common mistake of yelling "Question!" to try and close debate, and the discussion of points of order and appeals is quite good (except for the example, which has several issues).If you are looking for a nice short introduction that gives you just the primary rules you need in a nice slim volume, consider instead Robert's Rules of Order Newly Revised In Brief, 2nd edition (Roberts Rules of Order in Brief)All references in this review are from Robert's Rules of Order Newly Revised, 11th edition (Robert's Rules of Order (Paperback)).

I am not good when it comes to speaking with people. I get tongue tied and embarrassed real easy. That makes it really difficult sometimes when applying for jobs or having an important conversations with Dr's and schools which isn't good because sometimes I will just agree with them instead of standing up and stating my point. This book talks about ways to start and communicate in meetings or clubs. I love that it has "practice" meetings that you can read to get an idea of what to say and how to say it. That has helped me a lot when it comes to my sons IEP meetings that I have to go to. I no longer feel like we have to do things the way they want they want to because now I know how to talk in the meeting and be able to discuss all of the options that will help my son. This book really has a lot of helpful information in it and although at first I didn't think I would be interested in reading this book, I am glad I did because it has really made a difference in the way I handle meetings. I received this product as a sample to test and review. This review is solely my opinion. The I information I provided is what I experienced.

This is a nice pocket guide, but the page numbering is badly Out of Order!I purchased this book as a gift for a new chairman and am now reluctant to give them this book because the table of contents & chapters don’t match the actual page numbering. This is confusing if you’re trying to rely on this pocket guide in the middle of a meeting.On the plus side, the charts of motions and sample scripts are concise and helpful.Hope the author, editors and publisher do a much better job if there’s a new edition. I’d give the book 5 stars if the page numbers matched the table of contents.

This is a book everyone should read and keep to reference back when needed. This book talks to you about how to carry yourself through various types of meetings, and even gives you samples of the appropriate responses. This book has 9 chapters and the first chapter I found the most important and that was " Why We Use Robert's Rules of Order". When your in a meeting with people that are over your head you want to come across like you know what your doing well this book can do better than that it can teach you how do actually do it. You will be able to sit in a meeting and be heard or run the meeting yourself just by reading this book right here! I have taKen lots of notes from this excellent book and will apply them when necessary for now on. If you need help in a debate this book can help you it also has a chapter on motions and amendments those I found interesting. I love learning new things and I definitely learned a few new tricks just by reading this golden book!I received this book to review for my honest unbiased opinion.

I never paid attention before to rules of order. I thought a lot of this was common sense, and things you learn at church and in school. In our last focus group meeting, we were encouraged to just jump in and say what we thought. It seemed strange to me to be pushed into almost attacking each others thoughts. But it did teach me how I felt it was right to act in a group like that. In this book it goes over all the parts of a meeting, what is expected from whom, and how to properly act in these situations. I can see where a book like this is needed with the society today as it is. It was interesting but a bit dull to read. I think this should be read or taught in schools, so people know how to act properly instead of acting like an ape.I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own and I was not paid in any way.

Before reading this book the only real experience I'd had with Parliamentary procedure was high school debate class. I have, however, curiously attended numerous botched meetings and watched enough TV to get the just of the process and its importance. In Robert's Rules if Order In Action they take the original Pocket Manual of Rules of Order for Deliberative Assemblies, created in 1876, and condensed and picked the most pertinent info into a handy simplified version for easy reference.
