Review
“Jack’s Book is first rate…it offers the flavor and depth of good fiction while keeping well within the realm of literal truth.” “I suggest you read Jack’s Book…Mr. Gifford and Mr. Lee seem to have interviewed everyone connected with Kerouac.” — Vincent Canby“The greatest value of Jack’s Book…lies in the richness and depth…it is dynamic, mixing exceptionally well-written biography with oral journalism…it adds richness and depth to the previous portraits.” “A fascinating literary and historical document, the most insightful look at the beat generation.” — Dan Wakefield“There have been biographies of Kerouac, but this is an entirely different and much more satisfying work…not a static portrait, but a slow-moving picture of a man unfolding from childhood to heartbreak end; a drama whose focus or clarity or completeness changes depending on who’s holding the camera. An engrossing tale.” “A very immediate, crisp addition to the Kerouac papers—lively in its interspliced rhythms and…compelling.”“If you’re interested in listening to what the talk of the Fifties sounded like, and if you believe that literature may just have something to do with life, then read this book.” “My God, it’s just like Rashomon. Everybody lies and the truth comes out.” — Allen Ginsberg“To read Jack’s Book is to be present at a gathering of Kerouac’s friends, colleagues, lovers, even his…enemies—of all the lives of Kerouac I have read, this one has the most life.” — James Campbell“I consider Jack’s Book an essential text—it gives a far more authentic and balanced picture of Jack than any existing biography.” — Joyce Johnson

I love this book! I found this book when i was 15 at a Barnes and Noble. I lost the book part way through and had a really hard time finding it. I was so excited to find it on Amazon and finish the tour through Jack Kerouac's life. Reading through it this time was a much more enriching experience. I was able to stop and dive into the lives of each character in the book and get a deeper understanding of the entire generation and all of the back stories. I also now realize, I don't like Jack Kerouac as a person, but i understand him better. He's just not quite who i thought he was, none of them were. Except maybe Allen. I'd say he was the one true Beat.
I loved the approach of taking the. others view of Jack , to gain a true (?) portrait of him . Just piece the puzzle together . Some very detailed info here in this book I haven't seen before . Kerouac is still very relevant to our world , even to this day.
This is a compelling book about a fascinating writer but also about a certain time in America. It's written as an "oral biography," so it's a biography told in the voices of the people who knew Kerouac, i.e. William Burroughs talking about their first meeting and how it was Kerouac who came up with the title for Naked Lunch. Great stuff!
Excellent biography of Jacky Kerouacy. Kerouac warts and all. Good read for any On the Road aficionado.
Part of understanding Kerouac is understanding his life. And there's no better way of doing that than with with this excellently researched oral history which allows those who knew Kerouac best to tell you about the man.Kerouac intended for his novels to form part of a greater connected whole, firmly linked to the places and people he knew during his all too brief life. Which makes this book a must read for those who are about to delve into the work of one of America's most iconic writers.
I love oral histories, and I Kerouac's alright. Its neat that the people responsible for this book collected and intereviewed some of Jack's friends from before he became famous. I was also unaware of his firt's marriages annulment and his involvment in hiding a body. There's a lot of great snippets... but there's also a lot of boring windbags blowing in this book too.Still, its worth every penny.
I liked the fact that some of the stories could be corroborated between the people being interviewed. Great job!
