This book is a wonderful first-hand telling of the years this man spent in Nazi Germany/Poland during WWII. He was fourteen when the Nazi took over and was in the ghetto seeing many friends and neighbors murdered in the streets outside his third story window. His mother had died giving birth to his youngest brother and his father remarried so the family was five Jewish people watching the world and unbelieving. Finally the day came when his family was loaded onto the train and separated into those horrible lines when the Jewish people already knew what the lines meant.... his step-mother and young brother in one line...his father and middle brother in the work line for the work camps. His brother had the foot of his and the foot of the person on the other side slipped under his feet to look older/taller so he could be in his brother's line. The father and brothers stayed together all through the war...horrendous as it was; the carrying of rocks, cleaning latrines, etc. just to keep busy. At one time Manny was able to work in a factory but that did not get to last long...many times he was saved by the grace of God and he often asked WHY??If you like the history of the holocaust and WWII you must read this personal account from this author now living in America. My book was downloaded onto my Kindle and you can get yours now from Amazon. I do recommend it.

I just finished reading “Outcry Holocaust Memoirs” by Manny Steinberg. This book is truly magnificent. It makes you feel as if you are there with him. You begin sense that Nazi atrocities were a routine part of their plan to destroy the entire Jewish people, culture and tradition. You may unexpectedly realize that the tough, harsh experiences occurred to you in your life were insignificant compared to what happened to young Manny Steinberg and other captives. One should think that by now those atrocities have disappeared, but unfortunately, that is not the case. We are now aware of the beheading of people and atrocious acts of several new groups. Manny Steinberg’s memories is a must read for all!

This is an absolutely wonderful story of life during the Holocaust if "wonderful" is a word that could be used in conjunction with this terrible event. I've read quite a few books on this topic yet still have trouble believing how cruel human beings can be to one another. This book really brought home to me the horrible things that were done to so many people during WWII.But that being said - I wish there was someone I could ask a few questions--- for in the book are some things I don't understand. For instance - I thoroughly enjoyed all the old pictures. Where and how were these pictures obtained? In the story it was stated that Mendel never returned to his old home - yet there are still pictures. To be more specific, there is a caption under a photo that states Mendel kept this photo of his first Mom in the heel of his shoe. Yet in the story he loses his shoes and takes a pair off a dead German "Gestapo" that is hanging at one of the entrances. (I found it very touching that he is afraid his father won't approve of him taking the shoes.) So is this a different copy of that same photo? Again, at another point in the story it mentions that he has no clothes and uses a blanket, that he had to chew a hole in to get his head through so that it covers his body. So obviously there is no way to carry possessions, yet there are still the pictures that I found so fascinating. Did I read too quickly and miss the explanation?I'm truly not criticizing - it is a wonderfully insightful story which I wish was required reading for all high-school students so history does not repeat itself. Yet still these questions continue to bother me.Maybe, in the end, they bother me because Mr. Steinberg did such a fine job of making me feel like I knew him, his brother and father, and that's what makes me want to know all these little details. The more I read, the more I felt like I "belonged". The "Afterword" felt like I was reading a letter from a family member who wanted to catch me up with the goings on in his life. It made me happy to hear the "joy" in his words describing these later years.Thank you Mr. Steinberg for this "gift" of insight to a horrible yet so important time of your life! Although I am not a member of your faith, I don't think you will mind if I add you and your family members to my prayers at night. Shalom!

Manny Steinberg spent 6 years, from age 13 to age 19, in a ghetto in Poland and then in various concentration camps. Outcry is his story. I’ve read a lot of Holocaust survivor memoirs and I always ask myself how in the world did they survive. There are two common threads. One, they are determined to make it to liberation for some specific reason. For some that is to help a younger sibling, for others, like Mr. Steinberg, it is to be a witness about what happened. Two, there is always a kind German. A German who was only a Nazi because of the country where he was born. A German who disagreed with the Nazi philosophy, but knew they’d be shot, and maybe their family, too, if that was made known. And, so, they gave a few extra crumbs of bread or stopped a beating when no more could be withstood. I think that’s one of the most important takeaway from these memoirs and why they are so important. We need to be that kind German. In writing Outcry, Mr. Steinberg succeeded in his goal to be a witness. Well-written and quick to read, this is a book everyone should read so we will remember and never let such a thing happen again.
