Plot: In eighteenth century rural England, Lord James and his sister, Caroline, who have recently experienced the loss of their father, have their usual day's routine disrupted when their wayward younger brother, Walter, causes a collision while recklessly driving his carriage. Fortunately, there are no casualties, except for a loss of consciousness of one of the other passengers: an unfamiliar young woman around their age whose disheveled (but formerly elegant) attire and amnesia cause them to take her in. Beth, as she names herself until her memories fully return, is grateful to her benefactors and finds herself falling for James for whom the attraction is mutual. However, she is plagued by nightmares in which she finds herself at the mercy of a violent stranger with a hummingbird dagger and so eventually seeks help from a London doctor who specializes in helping patients retrieve their memories. As James and Caroline embark on a quest to track down Beth's family, hindered by the fact that quite a few of those they speak to seem to be hiding something or are otherwise shady, mysterious happenings begin to occur, including the disappearance of a servant, a break-in and visitors who claim to have knowledge of Beth's past. When Beth's memory begins to return, further clues surface which may lead to the possibility that she was kidnapped - and might not have been the only victim. As they try to track down the villains responsible, including some well-meaning but slapdash unsolicited sleuthing from Walter, Beth and James find their feelings deepen, but will they be able to unravel the mystery before further potentially fata danger happens? And can the clues be closer to home than they suspect?Thoughts: This is an enjoyable, intriguing mystery with period details that rang true. There were a few unfamiliar British terms, such as "peelers" I was unfamiliar with but was able to pick up from the context. For the most part, the characters behaved and spoke in a manner that rang true to the period (which is something I don't always see in this genre). The main characters were likeable, too, and I learned a little British political history in the bargain, though at times the pacing could have been less leisurely.
